The The Spunky Coconut Cookbook
Self-Published (my darling wife)

My wife and self-published this gluten free cookbook in the spring. My wife took the photos, and we used her hand-writing for the title and the chapter headers. Check out her gluten free cooking blog too! I designed the book's interior as well. You can see the back cover and a spread on my design:related portfolio. 7 x 9 trim.

The Unmentionables
Northwestern University Press

The play is about a small group of travelers in Africa (one is eaten by a crocodile). The croc photo ended just above the nose, so I added the extra space in Photoshop.

Secret Identity Crisis
Continuum

The author examines comic books as an element of Cold War pop culture. My design alludes to Captain America's chest. I made the blocks of color look as if they are an enlargement of the color half-tone of a comic page. See this at 100%.

The Worlds of Lincoln Kirstein
Northwestern University Press

Kirstein was a prominent figure in New York’s ballet scene in the 1930s and 40s The typographical flourishes reflect that time and place, while the colors refer back to the tones of the painting.

Battles without Bullets
Greenwood Publishing

This title is about the current cultural idea of reenactors, so I created a contemporary design that referenced the Civil War era. Not long after this front cover design was approved Greenwood was purchased by ABC-CLIO. It will be interesting to see if this book ever gets published.

College Student’s Guide to the Law
Taylor Trade Publishing

This legal handbook for students was written in a casual, often humorous manner. The challenge was to create a hip cover appealing to college-aged readers, while at the same time projecting the seriousness of the subject. The retro look is fun, and the simple color scheme keeps the design from being too over-the-top. On the printed cover a metallic foil stamp was used for all the red text. 3 PMS, plus a red foil stamp.

Hey Ranger!
Taylor Trade Publishing

When I saw the amusing scene of this bear on his hind legs I immediately thought of Yogi Bear at Jellystone Park. This book is a collection of humorous and wacky park stories, so I thought the comparison to the old TV show was a good one. I created the cartoon landscape and picked retro fonts to refelct that idea. See full cover

Fitness Kitchen
Taylor Trade

The list of book features allowed for an interesting side panel. The bullets between the lines of text are hearts, mirroring the heart-shaped bowl in the photo. 8.8 x 6.9 trim.
