Design & Production Manager, Minnesota Historical Society Press
Will Powers at the MNHS Press was my very first freelance client. He had such an eye for typography.
It was a joy to work with him.

War in Pacific Skies
Zenith Press
A paperback reprint of an earlier edition. I was pleased with the fitting and balance of the type. Black would usually be the go-to background color, but I thought dark blue would be more appropriate. This regiment was part of the 82nd Airborne. The colors of that unit's insignia were red, white and blue. See my alternate comps

War in Pacific Skies
Zenith Press
Designing a cover around someone else's art is a bit tricky. The designer wants to highlight the painting, but add something of his own too. I think this cover is a balanced result. The band at the bottom includes the rays of the Imperial flag of Japan—the US's opponent in the Pacific conflict. The center of the sun rests behind the main text elements. The colors are complimentary to those in the painting. Fonts are appropriate to the 1940s. 11 x 9.625 inch trim. See larger version

Monster Fire at Minong
Wisconsin Historical Society Press
This cover has a kind of back and forth balance that I like. Bright fireball (in the photo) on the right, FIRE (in the title) on the left, then back to the right with the author name.

Immigration at the Golden Gate
Praeger
The immigration process at Angel Island was a generally unfair and unpleasant. The blue and brown color scheme with bright green subtitle convey a slightly dark mood. These cover images appear as a cyanotype and a vandyke brown—photographic process common to the very early 20th century. Typographical flourishes around the subtitle also allude to the time period.

900 Miles from Nowhere
Minnesota Historical Society
This design emphasizes the isolation of the early settlers of Minnesota. 7 7/8 x 10" trim.

Gridiron Glory
Taylor Trade Publishing
Researching the photography was interesting for this title. The Naval Academy has a very easy to search database of images. West Point does not. Despite the preponderance of Navy photos, I think I was able to present a nice balance. 4 PMS.

Mussolini
Taylor Trade Publishing
I remember seeing on a WWII documentary that Mussoilini was keen on having himself photographed from below - to make him look more impressive. I played with that idea of perspective by putting the photograph and type on a slant. 3PMS (the gold color is a metallic ink)

Old Ironsides
Taylor Trade Publishing
For cover art, the author directed me to this dramatic night scene. I picked background colors that would compliment those of the painting. The typefaces and the pennant graphic allude to the ship's heyday in the early 19th century.

A New Concise History of the Crusdaes
Rowman and Littlefield
I seem to always end up making the DJ flaps red. I tried to resist for this one, but red just looked too good with the painting. See full dust jacket
