Collette's Republic
Berghahn Books

This book is about France in the late 19th - early 20th century. It was a treat to be able to use Art Nouveau type and graphics. I used 2PMS: purplish dark blue and a rosey metallic ink.

Where the Wild Books Are
University of Nevada Press

This book explores the subject of the environment as treated in literature.

The Bone Readers
Left Coast Press

This book was a reprint in need of a fresh cover. It's always an interesting to re-design existing books. The previous publisher's cover featured a photo of primate's face. My approach was to use skull illustrations from the interior to form a subtle jigsaw puzzle arrangement. The irregular profiles of the skulls fit in nicely with the cover text.

The American Oral History Manual
Left Coast Press

The cover features a giant quote mark, surrounded by text written in various Native American languages.

Making Waves
Paradigm Publishers

A simple, set sophisticated design.

Thunder & Herds
Left Coast Press

The title and author line are set in a antiqued typeface. The rough edges relate to the unrefined lines of the rock art. I decorated the dark grey background with medium-grey petroglyphs from various sites in the plains. The classic cover composition—title at the top, photo, then author at the bottom—balances the rough character of the photo and typeface to create a sophisticated academic look.

The Acquisition of Egyptian Arabic as a Native Language
Georgetown University Press

This title is part of a series of type-only covers. To add interest to the red background I added an Islamic graphic from one of my good, old Dover clip art books.

The Evolution of Cultural Diversity
Left Coast Press

The authors contend that “...there are a number of theoretical reasons to believe that cultural diversification might be tree-like, that is phylogenetic.”. Naturally, I thought an image of a tree would be appropriate. The branching text refers back to the photograph. 2 PMS.

Roman Military Equipment, Second Edition
Oxbow Books

I am an ancient history buff, so it was a real treat to work on this project. This is a specialized academic title, but the target audience includes the amatuer Roman history enthusiast as well as the professional archaeologist, ancient historian, etc. In desiging the cover I aimed for a classical look, incorporating a modern use of scale and composition.
